Vogue motor replacement: is it really the motor?

Has the assistance on your Vogue cut out, is the motor making noise, or does the bike ride jerkily? Replacing a motor is a big job. The problem is often in a sensor, a cable or the controller, and that's a lot easier to fix.

THE MOTOR

Front wheel, rear wheel or mid-drive: which motor is in your Vogue?

Depending on the model, a Vogue has a hub motor in the front wheel, a hub motor in the rear wheel, or a mid-drive motor. Many Vogue e-bikes use an AKM hub motor.

These AKM motors and parts for Vogue are available from stock:

  • Motor AKM RX95 9-pin silver: front hub motor for Vogue models with front-wheel drive (700c wheels).
  • Motor AKM 6-pin black: rear hub motor for Vogue electric cargo bikes from model years 2020, 2021 and 2022.
  • Freewheel AKM rear hub motor: the separate freewheel for the AKM rear motor.

The number of pins on the plug has to match your current motor. Not sure which motor you have? Send us a photo of the motor and the plug, and we'll work it out with you.

THE SIGNS

How to recognise a motor problem

Error code 0x23 (motor phase failure)
One of the three motor cables has no contact. Check the cables first; if they're intact, the motor is probably faulty.

Error code 0x24 (Hall sensor fault)
The sensors in the motor aren't giving a proper signal. Often a plug or a cable.

Jerky or stuttering ride
Especially when pulling away.

Grinding, ticking or rattling noise
Coming from the motor while you ride.

Assistance cuts out
While the battery is full and the display doesn't show a battery problem.

BEFORE YOU ORDER

Looks like the motor, but is it something else?

  • Pedal sensor (PAS): if the sensor or the magnet ring is loose or dirty, the motor gets no signal to assist.
  • Brake sensor: a brake lever that doesn't spring back fully switches the motor off (error code 0x25).
  • Settings: a wrong number of assistance levels or a wrong wheel size in the display causes odd riding behaviour. Check the manual for your display: UKC3 or UKS2.
  • Controller: error code 0x21 points to the controller, not the motor.

Have your Vogue checked at a service point. Our service partners have a lot of experience in diagnosing e-bikes, so you don't replace a motor that isn't broken.

DIY OR HAVE IT DONE

Can you replace a Vogue motor yourself?

Replacing a motor is a big job. The wheel has to come out, the motor has to be fitted into the wheel, and the bike has to be tested properly afterwards. We recommend having it done at a service point near you.

Not sure where to start? Get in touch with us: we'll first see whether we can help you ourselves. We usually reply within 24 hours.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

About Vogue motors

Usually not. First check the battery, the pedal sensor and the brake levers. If there's an error code on the display, look it up in the manual for your display.

That depends on your model: front or rear motor, and the number of pins on the plug. Not sure? Send us a photo of your motor and the plug, and we'll work it out with you.

We don't recommend it. A service point has the tools and can test the bike afterwards.

Warranty claims go through the shop where you bought your Vogue. Has the warranty expired? Then a service point can help you further.

EXPERIENCES

What our customers say

Rating

Knowledge center focused on total service and sharing know-how also of special electric bikes. They offer not only a listening ear but also the willingness to think along in solutions. They certainly do not shy away from difficulties. Where other companies gave up, they found the solution. Great service! Highly recommended.

What a fantastic company Ebikepartners is—founded by Gert. I received a warm welcome there with coffee, and they expertly diagnosed the problems with my Stella Copenhague. I was able to head home happy with a bike that worked perfectly. Kudos to Peter for his kindness and expertise.
