The motor on your Amslod
Is your motor running heavy, ticking, or suddenly a lot noisier than you are used to? Below you can read which signs point to a failing motor and, just as important, when it probably is not the motor at all.
If something does need replacing, it is often not the complete motor. On many front hub motors the bearings, the gears and the clutch can be replaced separately, and we keep those components in stock per motor type.

Six signs your Amslod motor needs attention
These six things come back most often when an Amslod motor is due for service or replacement.
- Your battery drains far too quickly.
When the motor runs heavy, the battery drains faster. That puts needless load on the battery and the controller, so those parts wear out sooner and can even fail from overload. - There is a ticking sound in the motor.
That can point to a mechanical problem inside the motor, in the gears or the clutch (freewheel). - The gears or bearings are worn.
On many front hub motors the bearings, gears and the clutch (freewheel) can be replaced. We keep a wide range of separate components in stock per motor type. - There is not enough grease in the motor.
If there is too little grease inside the motor, or the grease is spread unevenly, the motor starts running dry and makes a lot of noise. The gears and bearings then wear faster. Bearings and gears can be replaced, and the motor can be re-greased. - The speed sensor board is faulty, or its cable is broken.
In that case the motor stops giving assistance, or the speed is no longer shown on the display. The internals, the complete motor or the complete wheel can then be replaced. - The motor overheats and burns out.
Here too, the internals or the complete motor can be replaced.
Recognise one of these six? Read the block below first. A motor that stops giving assistance is often not the culprit at all.
CHECK THIS FIRST
It looks like the motor — but is it something else?
When a motor stops giving assistance, it is often a different problem. Before you order a motor, it is smart to run through these four things.
The speed sensor may be broken.
If the speed sensor is broken, the motor stops giving assistance as well. So switch on the walk assist. If the motor does run with walk assist, the motor is fine and the sensor needs replacing. That saves you the most expensive part of the drive system.
The phase cables can shake loose.
The phase cables run from the motor controller to the motor, and vibration can work them loose. The cables can be checked at the controller.
The connector is not seated properly.
On front hub motors that connector sits at the fork. Corrosion can build up there too, so the pins in the plug no longer make proper contact.
The motor controller may be broken.
Finally, the motor controller itself can be at fault.

About the motor on your Amslod
We see front hub motors fail most often when one cyclist tows another. The extra weight demands too much peak load, which damages the gears, the bearings and eventually the whole motor.
It is usually a combination of gears, bearings and grease. Once a specialist opens the motor, they can make the right diagnosis and replace whatever needs replacing.
In practice we regularly see motors pass 50,000 kilometres and still run fine after 15 years. What matters is that they are serviced in time. Front hub motors in particular last far longer when the gears, bearings and grease are renewed every 8,000 kilometres or so. For an average rider that is often after three to four years.
Often not. When a motor stops giving assistance it is frequently a different problem. Switch on the walk assist: if the motor runs with that, the motor is fine and the pedal sensor needs replacing. Other possible causes are a broken motor controller, phase cables shaken loose, or a connector that is not seated properly. On front hub motors that connector sits at the fork, where corrosion can stop the pins making proper contact.
On many front hub motors the bearings, gears and the clutch — the freewheel — can be replaced, and we keep a wide range of separate components in stock per motor type. If more is wrong, the internals, the complete motor or the complete wheel can be replaced instead.
